Why Champerology exists: confessions of a tired woman in her thirties
I am in my mid-thirties and I am tired. Not of work, or of life. Of being perfect, mostly - of a project I never signed up for but seem to have a lifetime membership to.
It follows me everywhere. A coworker mentions her 6am run, and suddenly I'm in a competition I didn't enter. A man at the bakery tells me about his sober October, unprompted, while I stand there holding a croissant like a defendant.
Everyone is doing better than someone - and for a few minutes every day, that someone is me.
The guilt economy
Pour a glass of wine? Here's an article about what alcohol is doing to your skin. Enjoy some bread? A man with a ring light would like to explain the glycemic index to you. Lie on the sofa? Your feed is full of people who woke at 5am to run, journal, and make a smoothie that looks like pond water - and they're thriving, apparently, on camera, in sportswear that cost more than my groceries.
Somewhere along the line, enjoying anything became a moral failing. Every pleasure now arrives with a pop-up window of shame. I used to just eat cheese. Now I eat cheese while being informed.
The small rebellion
So I built this corner of the internet for people like me. People who are done optimizing and would like, for one evening, to be a person instead of a project.
Champerology works like this: the horoscope gives you the excuse, and you pour the glass. Astrology is the excuse, never the authority. The planets are the only influencers who don't have a before-and-after photo, a supplement line, or an opinion about your cortisol.
What we do here
- We enjoy things without a webinar about it. A glass of something cold is not a relapse. It's Tuesday behaving like Tuesday.
- We blame the planets. Mercury did it. The moon made me. The stars said yes. Freeing, and legally unverifiable.
- We log off. The woman with the 5am routine doesn't know you exist. The friend across the table does, and she's also tired, and she also brought bubbles.
I didn't quit trying to be better. I just demoted it. It now reports to actual life: good company, cold sparkling wine, and a horoscope read with the seriousness of a weather forecast for a planet I don't live on.
Turns out the better version of me was the one having the second glass.
Drink chilled. You're doing fine.
Enjoyed this? Forward it to the friend who needs the excuse tonight.
